The years between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century were characterized a great many discoveries and inventions and one of these was the car.
At the beginning of 1800 there were motor vehicles powered by steam, gas or alcohol, but the breakthrough came with the invention in 1841 a fiery-pneumatic machine for lifting water from part of Luigi De Cristofori , later introducing the use of liquid fuels such as diesel fumes, which was behind the invention of the internal combustion engine then patented by Nicholas Barsanti (1821-1864) and Felice Matteucci (1808-1887 ) in 1854 .
The first was to understand the vast scope Benz that 1886 he applied for the first time in human history on a tricycle followed shortly by Daimler .
In those years witnessed a proliferation of automobile factories in Europe and Austria and Italy were no less with the 'Austro-Daimler , la Gräf & Stift , la Steyr-Puch , la Laurin-Klement l’una, con la Fiat , la Brixia-Zust , l' Alfa Romeo , l’ Isotta-Fraschini l’altra.
Nel 1907 were designed by the Technical Director Engineer S. Bauer , two frames called 18/24 and 35/40 HP HP, but then realized it was only the second 5.
This model features a vertical 4-cylinder engine 6868 cc, with shaft drive, 4 speed gearbox plus reverse, speed 97 km / h declared, was presented at the Paris Motor Show the same years with a good success with critics and audiences.
Ringalluzzita the perhaps unexpected success, the factory took up to 150 workers, the patterns were created individually on the Body basis of the requests of customers and products from the Vienna Schafrenek & Lonar .
The optimism, however, was not rewarded by the equally successful. Is it because a car with those features was designed for the elite, it will be because those who wanted a car and could afford it had already purchased one of those models that were the most popular in those days, it will be a shortage of advertising at the local level, but the orders did not arrive: only nine cars were produced during the 1908 .
At the end of that year the Assembly shareholders decide to dissolve the company. Settlement will then in 1911 .
The unsold cars were put into service as car square section between Barcola and Miramare.
In 1924 tried again the San Giusto Factory Cars SA small car with a revolutionary for its time, a rear-wheel drive 750 cc. displacement designed by the Birds of Nemi Guido (1885-1964).
The frame was presented at the Motor Show at the Milan Fair the same year and attracted little interest.
writes Italian Cars, one of the most influential magazines of the time: "Sangiusto is found in the stand of the largest and most interesting news from around the Exhibition" .
The engine, a small four-cylinder 750 cc, air-cooled by a heater controlled mechanically by the engine itself, it is placed posteriorly and form a single unit with the gearbox and the differential, the front and rear axles and wheels to allow them to swing and independent of the cylinders are arranged inside a sleeve aluminum in which circulates the air inlet to the radiator.
A concept that strikingly anticipates those that would, in later years, the guidelines of the automotive technology.
Yet, off the echo of Motor Show, after a few months, the small car in Trieste he never talked about. The San Giusto was built in fact no more than a dozen specimens.
The company put into liquidation as early as 1926 , was finally removed from the Register of Companies in 1928 .
And here ends the history of the automobile built in Trieste .
In fact, in 1923 we wanted to try the Ford Motor Company of Italy, but in the establishment of Trieste is simply assembled component parts built in England Model A and Fordson tractors . From Trieste cars and tractors were then distributed only in Italy, even in the Balkans and the countries of the Middle East.
In any case, the factory Ford not stand much more. The presence of foreign factories was seen on national soil as an insidious competition for the Italian industry, which pressed the government for protection of our products. The plant Ford Motor Company of Italy of Trieste was closed by the Prefect of authority to local telegram of the Duce, " for overriding reasons of national interest , October 26, 1929 .
of the two cars Trieste few traces remain .
The curious can go to the National Museum Carlo Biscaretti of Ruffo di Torino or at the National Museum of Science and Technology "Leonardo da Vinci" Milan where they kept two boxes of San Giusto.
nostalgic I can go early in the morning on the Colle di San Giusto to contemplate the ' Alba.
... maybe from behind the windows of a Ford .
