this Act was approved by the Supreme Pontiff Pope Gregory XV, when, with his Bull Pastoris Aeterni, approved the establishment of the Consortium of the Brethren, founded by Ven P. Dominic of Jesus Mary, Discalced Carmelite, in which, among other pious exercises of the dead pro, there is to offer and consecrate them suffrage satisfattoria part of their works. Later, this pious practice was widespread with admirable success by Father D. Joseph Gaspar Oliden Teatino, who also suggested to call in the hands of the Blessed Virgin and the votes of these works, aflînchè their actual distribution in favor of those holy souls that she wants to leave as soon as the pains of Purgatory. With this offer for another will not yield the result that special and personal to each, so that the priests are not prevented from applying Mass according to the intention of those who gave their alms, nor to the faithful is removed the freedom of being able to offer, when they want, their good works to the Lord for some special purpose, for example, petitioning for grace or give thanks for favors received.

this heroic act of charity was enriched with many favors, with the Decree of August 23, 1728, by Pope Benedict XIII, confirmed later by Pope Pius VII December 12, 1788, which were then favor by the Supreme Pope Pius IX, by decree of the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences dated 10 September 1852, specified as follows:

IV. all the indulgences which are granted or that you provide in the following, which will profit from the faithful who have made this offer may be applied to the souls in Purgatory.

Finally, the same Pope Pius IX, having in view those boys who still

E ciò per vostra maggior gloria, per imitare l'esempio vostro, o Gesù mio, che tutto Voi deste for the souls in Heaven and to increase the number of your undying adoration and glorifications of your Mother, who intercedes for me.
